How to Apply Peel and Stick Wallpaper: Step-by-Step Guide

Every wallpaper and mural we make is peel-and-stick — a self-adhesive fabric that goes straight onto the wall with no paste, no soaking and no pasting table. This guide walks through fitting it from start to finish, including pattern matching and how to take it down later.

What you will need

  • Your wallpaper panels (labelled in hanging order)
  • A tape measure and a pencil
  • A spirit level or a plumb line
  • A plastic smoother or a clean squeegee
  • A sharp craft knife with spare blades
  • A step ladder
  • A helper for anything taller than about 1.5m

Step 1 — Check and prepare the wall

Peel-and-stick needs a smooth, dry, sound surface. It bonds well to painted plaster and lining paper. It will not hold reliably on:

  • Fresh paint — wait three to four weeks after painting
  • Textured or woodchip walls
  • Flaking or powdery paint
  • Gloss or silk finishes without a light sanding first

Wipe the wall with a barely-damp cloth to remove dust, and let it dry completely. Fill and sand any holes.

Step 2 — Measure and plan your drops

Find the width of one panel. Starting from a corner, measure that distance along the wall and draw a vertical line using your level or plumb line — this is your guide for the first drop. Do not assume the corner is straight; it rarely is.

Lay your panels out on the floor in order first so you can see how the pattern connects.

Step 3 — Hang the first drop

Peel about 30cm of the backing away from the top. Line the panel up with your pencil line, leaving a few centimetres of excess at the ceiling for trimming. Press the top into place.

Now work downwards: peel the backing a little at a time with one hand while smoothing the wallpaper onto the wall with the other, using the plastic smoother in a fan pattern from the centre outwards. This pushes air bubbles to the edges. Going slowly here is the difference between a clean finish and a lumpy one.

Step 4 — Match the pattern on the next drop

Bring the second panel up alongside the first. Slide it until the pattern lines up, then butt the edges together — do not overlap them. Smooth it down the same way. Repeat across the wall.

If a small bubble appears, lift the paper back to just past it and re-smooth. For a stubborn bubble, pierce it with a pin and press it flat.

Step 5 — Trim the edges

Run the plastic smoother firmly into the join at the ceiling, skirting and corners to make a crease. Hold the smoother against the crease as a straight edge and cut along it with a sharp blade. Change the blade often — a dull blade drags and tears.

At internal corners, cut the panel with a couple of millimetres to spare and lap it just onto the next wall; start the following drop with a fresh plumb line on the new wall.

Step 6 — Sockets and switches

Turn the power off at the consumer unit. Smooth the wallpaper over the socket, then make a small cross-cut over the opening and trim to the edge of the faceplate. Loosen the faceplate, tuck the edges behind it, and screw it back.

How to remove peel-and-stick wallpaper later

Lift a top corner and pull slowly downwards at a low angle, close to the wall, keeping steady tension. On a sound painted wall it comes away cleanly with no residue. If it feels stuck, warming it with a hairdryer softens the adhesive. Any faint marks wipe off with a damp cloth.

Does peel and stick wallpaper damage walls?
Not on sound, fully-cured paint — it is designed to remove cleanly. It can pull at fresh, flaky or poorly bonded paint.

How long does it last?
Indefinitely while it is up. It is wipe-clean and hard-wearing, and you can take it down whenever you want a change.

Can I use it in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes, away from direct water and steam. Avoid fitting it right next to a shower or hob.

Can I reposition it?
Yes, while you are hanging it — lift and re-smooth. Once it has settled for a day or so, treat it as a permanent application.
